Two Connecticut taxi operators will add 20 Ford Transit Connect vehicles, powered by compressed natural gas, to each of their fleets.

Compressed natural gas is less expensive than gasoline and releases 30 percent to 40 percent fewer greenhouse gases than similar gasoline-powered vehicles, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Metro Taxi of West Haven and the Yellow Cab Co. of Bloomfield each ordered 20 of the vehicles, whose fuel efficiency averages 21 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway.

“CNG is the cleanest alternative fuel available,” said Bill Scalzi, president of Metro Taxi.

Marco Henry, president of Yellow Cab, which serves the Greater Hartford area, said the new Transit Connect taxis will be added to his fleet of more than 100 cabs.

The two Connecticut firms are among several New England livery companies that have ordered CNG taxi units, a Ford statement said. The Transit Connect is built at Ford’s plant in Kocaeli, Turkey, company spokeswoman Anne Marie Gattari said.

The CNG systems are built by Dallas-based BAF Technologies, which is Ford’s authorized CNG outfitter. BAF is a subsidiary of Clean Energy Fuels Corp. of Seal Beach, Calif.

The two Connecticut taxi companies are scheduled to take delivery of the new vehicles this spring, said Luis Tejeda, general sales manager of Interstate Ford Truck Sales in Hartford, which will deliver the completed vehicles to both tax companies.

“We have committed to deliver the vehicles to them by March 15 or earlier,” Tejeda said.

Tejeda would not say how much the vehicles, which are specially equipped, cost. Both taxi companies could not immediately be reached for comment.
