No other company is addressing the needs of the elderly and disability community serving Greater Hartford with wheelchair accessible taxi’s while at the same time demonstrating leadership in the arena of alternative fuel vehicles.
In Connecticut over the next 15 years the number people over 65 years of age will increase by 40% (207,745), due to the aging of the baby boom generation. The issue of senior transportation will reach a critical concern. The Yellow Cab Company understands the importance of lifelong mobility planning and the role on-demand access to transportation plays for the elderly, disabled and other individuals with driving challenges in our state.
According to the Administration on Aging, by the year 2030 the number of drivers over age 85 will be 4–5 times what it is today. Because our roads and automobiles are not designed for the existing elderly population—and because the skills and abilities associated with driving tend to diminish with age—viable alternate forms of transportation for the elderly and community of persons with disabilities must be addressed.
Simple math tells us the demand will continue for years to come. The time is now to implement self paying, 24/7 on-demand, universal access transportation services. This is especially important in underserved communities outside of mass transit options provided by state and federal grants. Offering dignified transportation alternatives for the elderly and others as they transition from driving-to-non-driving lifestyles is an important factor in reducing the fear of social isolation that aging can bring.
